Return to Mainstay

After a week of festivities in their honor, the members of the Last Drop said fair well to their halfling friends in Renefik and headed back to Mainstay. They arrived late in the afternoon a week later and were surprised to see the city awash in brown and gold. Everywhere they looked they saw the banner of the Charitable Marauders. Apparently one of their members had one the championship at the Arena not long ago. Afterwards the entire group rooted out an illegal weapon smuggling ring, destroying one of the major crime syndicates in the city in the process. As a result, very few people paid attention to the events in the Witchlight Fens.
Needless to say, Sir Marcus was not pleased by this turn if events. Never the less he paid the group their dues and thanked them for the efforts. He warned that they would need to make a bigger splash in order to capture the public's attention. He thought that he had just such an opportunity. The major of Whitefield had put out a request for any able bodied adventurers who would aid him in searching for any evidence on the fate of his long lost niece. Sir Marcus explained that the majors niece was actually a member of the famous adventuring group the Storm Crows, who mysteriously disappeared over a decade ago.
"Whitefield is a major settlement in the north with a great deal of pull in the kingdom. The Storm Crows were a famous group of adventurers, their disappearance is legendary, solving this mystery would surely gain us public favor", said Sir Marcus. So on this lead the group found themselves at the docks again booking passage north in search of their next adventure.

The Major of Whitefield

The trip north proved uneventful and the party found themselves in Whitefield two weeks after leaving Mainstay. Their first order of business was to seek an audience with the town major. This proved surprisingly easy given the size of the down. Within an hour of arrival the group found themselves in the majors office answering his summons.
"Welcome to Whitefield gentleman, what can I do for you?", said the major.
"We are here to answer your summons for able bodied adventurers", replied Adrick.
"Ah ha! The famous Charitable Marauders, it is a honor. I dare say I did not expect that you would come soon so given the word of your deeds in Mainstay not long ago", exclaimed the major in delight.
"We'll Isn't he in for surprise", joked Hazlo.
"With all due respect Mr. Mayor, we are not the Charitable Marauders. We are in fact the Last Drop and while we aren't as famous as the Marauders, I can assure you that we are equals to them in every way", declared Adrick.
"I suppose it was too much to hope that the Charitable Marauders would actually answer my summons. Well, since you are here, and since you do seem able-bodied, I suppose I can let you take a shot at this task for me. As you may or may not know my niece was a member of the famous adventuring group the Storm Crows. They were known throughout the land and they accomplish many fabled deeds. They operated out of a secret base somewhere in the wilderness outside of Whitefield. Alas, the last anyone has ever heard or seen of this group was over a decade ago. The common assumption is that they went off on some adventure in a far distant land and befell some terrible fate. This certainly is a logical conclusion, however I believe there may be some clue to their ultimate fate still left in their secret hideout. Unfortunately no one has ever been able to discover the location of this secret base. This is a test that I lay before you, find Storm Crow's secret hideout, search it for any evidence of the ultimate fate of my niece and bring me what you can as proof. In exchange I will provide your group with 1000 gold pieces as well as a allowing each of you to take your pick of the horses from our famous stables. What do you say to this?", questioned the mayor to the entire group.
"One more point of order", interjected Ballimor, "we get to keep anything else we find within the ruin."
"I can agree to that", responded the major.
"Then I think we have a deal", affirmed Adrick with the rest of the group nodded in agreement. "Any ideas where to start looking for information on the whereabouts of this secret base Mr. Mayor?"
"I believe the Storm Crows had a fondness for a certain ale that is only brewed by one of our taverns here in town. You might want to start by questioning the barkeep over there.", he replied.

A Tale of Two Taverns

At the mayors suggestion the group proceeded to head towards the the Baying Horse Tavern, one of only two such establishments within the city of Whitefield. This tavern was located in the upscale part of town surrounded by many fine looking houses and other establishments. As they stepped in the door they were greeted by a warm smile from the bar keep.
"What can I do for you strangers", questioned the bar keep whose name happened to be Anton.
"Good afternoon, my name is Adrick and these gentlemen behind me are my compatriots. We are the adventuring group the Last Drop", announced Adrick.
"Welcome members of the Last Drop, your patronage is always appreciated", said Anton as he ushered the group into seats at a table. "I must say I am a bit surprised to see your sort up here. Usually you adventure types prefer to hang out at that shady tavern down the road near the docks. Though I won't say you didn't make the right choice of establishments that's for sure. Now what can I get for you gentlemen?"
"Bring us each smug of your finest ale Anton", replied Adrick. "Then I'm hoping you may be able to help out with some information." As Anton filled the drink order Adrick filled him in on their mission.
"Yep, them Storm Crows Love my special brew ale. Occasionally they request the whole flask of it that they could transfer back to their hide out in the woods. My assistant Jeffrey used to run it out to them. But he never got to see the actual fortress, they meet him at the edge of the woods and would take it in from there themselves", said Anton.
"Is Jeffrey still around? Would we be willing to guide us to this drop off point?", asked Adrick.
"Why I don't see why not. Though I imagine he'll want some compensation for it what you have in mind I can negotiate for him being as I am his employer?", questioned Anton.
"I think ten gold pieces would be fair compensation for a day's travel wouldn't you?", replied Adrick.
"Aye, I say that be just about right. Meet back here tomorrow morning and I'll have 'im ready for ya", responded Anton. The party finished their drinks and thanked Anton for the information before departing. Once back into the street Ballimor suggested that they check out the other tavern for good measure. Hazlo agreed so the party headed south towards the docks.

The Bone Fish Inn was a stark contrast from its competitor to the north. The it sat in the middle of the docks flanked by warehouses fisheries and other assorted buildings. The wood was old and rotting in many places, the sign had faded long-ago with weather and age, and the entire area gave off a generally unwelcoming feel.
"Now this is my kinda place", announced Hazlo as they entered the tavern. Inside the tavern was dark, damp, and dingy. The barkeep was an older human by the name of Toke, who gave them all a once over before filling their drink order.
"We are here looking for information about the Storm Crows, know anyone who might have interacted with them back when they were around?", asked Hazlo.
"Lots o' folks had dealings with them Crows back in the day. Mosta them wern't too good neither," said the bar keep with a snarl. "That man o'r there was pretty chummy with the she Crow, he'd be the one ya should talk to", he said gesturing to a booth in the far corner. Hazlo thanked the man and approached the stall with Adrick in tow. "Buy you a drink my friend? Wondering if you could offer me some information iffin some coin be if intrest to you", said Hazlo passing the man several silver peices in the process.
"Just what sort of information are you looking for anyway? I'll tell you know, I ain't done nothing wrong this week", replied the stranger at the table.
"I've heard that you used to be close with one of the Storm Crows, we're looking for information on them, anything you know can be helpful", said Adrick.
"Storm crows...aye me and Agera, she was the mayor's niece you know, used to go together back in the day. That is before they disappeared altogether", replied the stranger in the corner.
"Do you have any information as to the whereabouts of their secret base?", said Adrick.
"No, I only met with her here in Whitefield", the stranger answered, his eyes drifted off for a moment lost in a thought.
"Perhaps you have some clue as to their ultimate fate?", probed Hazlo.
"Nothing concrete, but I do have my suspicions. You see, common rumor is that they befell some terrible fate in some far distant land. But I think otherwise. It all started a few months prior to their disappearance when the group to come back from one of its greatest adventures yet. They had managed this dry I necromancer in his tower somewhere in the woods fire to the southwest. In there they discovered some ancient powerful artifact which they have brought back here to further study. Agera was the magic user of the group and naturally duty fell to her to try and discern the artifacts history and powers. It was around this time that I began to notice several changes in her personality and appearance. She became more reclusive and devoted more and more time during the day to studying and observing the artifact. She also began to lose pigmentation in her face, her skin became more opaque as if she was anemic, and her hair started turning gray prematurely. The last change I noticed was a growing sense of paranoia about the artifact and about others around her. Shortly before they all disappeared Agera had become convinced that the other members of the group were plotting against her. Last time I saw her she was an incoherent wreck babbling on and on about chosen ones and covenants and some such nonsense. To my knowledge that was the last time anyone had ever seen any of the Storm Crows alive. If you ask me, it had to do with that artifact they brought back. I may not be a great mage but even I know not to play around with artifacts of dark power." He took a big drink of his ale and went Silent for a while pondering what are you just said. "That's about all I can tell you or am going to say."
Hazlo and Adrick took the mans hint and rose up from the table tossing him l a few more silver coins before walking away. They gather the rest of their party and headed back to their rooms at the other end. Please that they had gathered so much information in one day yet incredibly disturbed by what they had heard.

Storm Crow Tor
![Picture](/uploads/1/8/6/5/18651430/3622722.jpg?652)
The party rose early the next morning and met up with their guide in the common room of the Baying Horse Tavern. Jeffry was eager to set out at once telling the group that it would take no more than half a day to arrive at his old meeting point. Seeing no reason to delay any longer the group obliged the young lad setting out immediately in search of the Storm Crows secret layer. Several hours later he brought them to a halt at the edge of an old forest thick with overgrowth and vegetation. He explained that he would hide the barrels behind a rock on the edge of the forest and there was find the payment from the Storm Crows. Having no further need of the lad the Last Drop sent him home and proceeded into the forest in search of the base.
They wandered for several hours but were unable to find any evidence of its existence. Just as they were beginning to give up hope of finding anything before nightfall, Lucan stumbled upon an old hiking trail leading deeper into the forest. The trail had been disguise quite cleverly but Lucan's expert tracking skills allowed him to notice what most others would not. Bigger follow the trail for another hour until it opened up into a large clearing deep in the heart of the forest. In the middle there was a large rock formation with carved steps leading into a cave entrance, perhaps the remnants of some ancient temple.
Ruhdon took the point as the group headed down into the cave mouth. After descending for several hundred feet they came upon a long hall leading to an archway. In front of the doorway was a makeshift stone barricade with two hooded figures hiding behind it. The room was dark, the only light shone from Ruhdon's sword which he had cast his light spell upon. At the site of the intruders the two hooded figures launched javelins at the party before retreating back into the room behind them. The group gave chase, suspicious of a trap, yet anxious for some action nonetheless.
When they entered the larger room behind they were confronted by half a dozen hooded figures all armed and ready for a fight. Unfortunately for the mysterious creatures, the members of the Last Drop were well seasoned to combat by now and made quick work of their foes. Within minutes the fight was over, the only real test coming from two translucent gelatinous cubes that caught the group momentarily off guard. One of them even managed to engulf Ruhdon, but the swordmage quickly recovered and hacked the creature to bits. After the last foe had fallen, the group searched the bodies for valuables but found very little of value. They did discover that the creatures were some sort of birdlike humanoid, but beyond that they learned previous little from the encounter. Slightly discouraged, the group headed into a door in the far wall if the chamber still searching for signs of the Storm Crows.

Fighting the Overgrowth
![Picture](/uploads/1/8/6/5/18651430/5070626.png)
Heading down the hallway from the first area the group found themselves facing a swollen wooden door at the end of a narrow hallway. Hazlo checked the door for traps and, finding it to be clean, pulled the door open slowly to have a look inside. He found a room thick with vegetation, the air was damp and cool and the entire room shown in an eerie green biolumincent light emminating from dozens of strange fungal growths. In the dead center if the room stood a massive fountain, completely overgrown with plant life. Sensing no immediate danger he opened the door wide and stepped into the room, followed by the rest of his party members.
As soon as he entered the room, Lucan immediately recognized several of the plant formations to be hostile sentient beings, cappible of moving and attacking on their own. He put the party on alert, and not long after that did a massive hulking plant with vines spring from the center pool looking for a fight.
The plant creatures proved more if a challenge then the bird like humanoids from before. This was in part due to their regenativr abilities and their hive mind like status. Their leader was a massive fungal growth with a black and red speckled cap. It inflicted decent damage to Ruhdon, but in the end it fell along with its colony mates.
Upon closer inspection of the room, the party discovered it to be an ancient store room for food and supplies. Left to its own devices the plants had grown wild and feral over the years. Though most of the rooms materials were long since rotted away, Hazlo managed to find an intact chest containing a fair amount of gold and items. Content to move on, the party headed out a door opposite the entrance still searching for signs of the Crows themselves.

Entering the Crypts
![Picture](/uploads/1/8/6/5/18651430/928325.jpg?371)
The Last Drop headed down another hallway which took a turn due south before ending in a set of large double doors. Once again Hazlo peered around a slightly open door to determine the lay of the land before entering. He found the cavernous room devoid of life, yet filled with tomes and sarcophagi. In addition to these, the western wall sported 3 ornate granite doors, no doubt leading to carved mausoleums. The ground was littered with stone debries, food and other living supplies, and lots and lots of black and grey feathers. Far across the room to the south lay a complete drago skeleton, half encased in some sort of stone. The far western wall contained a small alcove holding a bubbling fountain.
Hazlo steeped into the room to have a closer look and was immediately meet by a hail of javelins. The party sprung into action and launched into the room ready for a fight. Hazlo retreated to the shadows and searched for any stragglers that he could pick off. Lucan took up a postion inside the doorway and started reigning fire down upon the bird creatures, while Ballimor, Adrick and Ruhdon moved towards the main group of enemies gathered in the center of the room. Ballimor made way for one of the sarcofigi that several enemies were hiding behind. As he reached the edge he dropped his ax and grabbed the edge of the sarcofigi's edge. With a mighty push Ballimor lifted the large stone object over the edge and dropped it upon the helpless creatures hiding behind. With a cloud of dust, bone and broken stone the coffin crashed to the ground, demoralizing the rest of the enemies with the boldness of the action. Afterwards, the battle went smoothly for the Last Drop, the enemies proved little challenge despite their overwhelming numbers.
That was until Ballimor decided to check behind one of the mosoleum doors and was greeted by an angery spectre. Within moments two others had emerged from the other tomes to confront the intruder. Thankfully Adrick quickly came to Ballimor's aid, and together the two dwarfs defeated their incorporeal foes.
Minutes later the room fell silent once more, the last of the bird creatures having fallen to Hazlo's bow. The party took the oppertunity to check their surroundings. The dragon skeleton turned out to be cursed, summoning the wraith of the now defeated specters to any who dare disturb it. The coffins in the center contained the remains of two of the Storm Crows, one was found with an impressive set of magical armor, the other held a crystal key. The party also found gold and other valuables from the three mosuleums. They then turned two the fountain, which Ruhdon quickly determined to be magical in nature. Several party members chose to drink from the waters and learned the waters bestowed a random magical effect upon the drinker. With this knowledge several party members filled an empty flask with the waters for future use, before the group settled into one if the mosoleums to test the night.
